Free Pattern - Variegated Vest

This pattern uses a great stitch to make the best of variegated yarn. The mix of Garter st rows and ribbing breaks up the color nicely without being overwhelming. The shaping is very simple: shaped armholes with a crew neck. This is a good pattern for the beginner knitter who's not tempted by plain Stockinette stitch, as well as the more advanced knitter who's looking for a classic design to knit and showcase that special variegated yarn from their stash.

Sizes: 35 (38, 44, 47)"

Materials: Approximately 465 (515, 585, 665, 755) yards of chunky-weight yarn
One pair each size 8 and 10 needles or size to obtain correct gauge
One 16" size 8 circular needle

Gauge: In Pattern stitch, 4 sts = 1"

Pattern Stitch: Rows 1 and 2: Knit. Rows 3–6: K1, p1.

Back: With smaller needles, CO 61 (67, 73, 79, 85) sts. Work in K1, P1 rib for 2", inc 9 sts evenly in last WS row—70 (76, 82, 88, 94) sts. Then, with larger needles, work in Pattern stitch for rest of Back. Work even until 13 (13 1/2, 14, 14 1/2, 15)" from beg, ending after a WS row. Armhole Shaping: BO 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end every other row 5 times—50 (56, 62, 68, 74) sts. Work even until 8 (8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2, 10)" above armhole—21 (22, 23, 24, 25)" from beg, ending after a WS row. Next row, BO 14 (16, 18, 20, 22) sts, work across center 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) sts and leave on holder for back of neck, BO rem sts.

Front: Work as for Back until 17 (18, 19, 20, 21)" from beg, ending after a WS row. Neck Shaping: Work across 19 (21, 23, 25, 27) sts, turn leaving rem sts on holder. Working on this side only, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 5 times—14 (16, 18, 20, 22) sts. Work even until same length as Back to shoulder. BO all sts. To complete other side, leave center 12 (14, 16, 18, 20) sts on holder for front of neck, and work on rem sts to match first side.

Finishing: Join shoulder seams. Neckband: With RS facing, circular needle and beg at left shoulder seam, pick up and k 18 sts on left side of neck, knit across 12 (14, 16, 18, 20) sts from front holder, pick up and k 18 sts on right side of neck, knit across 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) sts from back neck holder—70 (74, 78, 82, 86) sts. Rep for 2nd armhole edge.
