Charted Fruit
This collection of charted fruits is to be used as a stepping
stone to designing. Place the fruits within one of your favorite
pattern, either for you or for a child. Good patterns to use
are the Classic
Cardigan (work plain pockets with fruits).
The Classic V-Neck Pullover
for Kids is another good pattern and is free to download.
Here are some options:
- Repeat one fruit around the bottom edges all in a row.
- Alternate fruits around.
- Create a stitch grid in plain stockinette stitch surrounded
by seed stitch in horizontal and vertical rows and place
fruit motifs inside each solid square.
- Work a vertical row of fruits on each side of a cardigan's
front bands.
- Use in a random pattern allover your garment.
To better visualize your finished project draw a rough sketch
of your garment shape. Using a photocopier to create several
blank shapes helps. Then go to town with drawing in the motifs.
Once you've decided on the layout you like best, you can
use graph paper to actually chart the motifs in place. You
will use this pattern so make sure you have the correct number
of squares across for the size you're going to make.
The fruits showed at left are worked as follows:
- apple: 8 sts x 12 rows with embroidered stem
- cherries: 11 sts x 13 rows with embroidered stems
- watermelon: 10 sts x 6 rows
- strawberries: 12 sts x 14 rows (including embroidered
stem)
